Can I Get Some of That?

Yesterday I took my kids to Dinosaur camp in the morning, we rode bikes outside for two hours while the baby slept and then went to the pool for another three hours. While driving back from the pool my son asked, "Mom, what are we going to do when we get home"? I felt like saying, "Honey, mommy's going to drink a rum and diet coke and pass out on the couch. I don't care what you do as long as the baby isn't choking and you are all quiet".

Where do these kids get this energy and where can I get some? I'm trying very hard to wear my kids out but all I'm doing is wearing myself out. The more I do with them the more they expect. They are becoming activity greedy little monsters.

Maybe I need another "don't leave the house, stay in pj's all day", day. Then maybe they'll appreciate a few hours at the pool or camp in the morning. But then I'll be pulling my hair out listening to, "I'm bored".

What's the lesser of two evils? Being exhausted from running around like a crazy mom or listening to my kids fight and be bored? I can't decide.

Amanda, I love your wit!

Yes...I believe many parents (me included!) have molded their kids into expecting Mom to keep them entertained.

Don't worry though...they outgrow the need for Mom's creative entertainment when they reach the teen years. Then you can spend all your energy wondering what their doing!

When you mentioned dinosaur camp...I have to admit I was a little envious!! I kinda miss those days!

Amanda,

I felt like was just reading a commentary on my own life.

I think being exhausted ourselves or dealing with the kids bordem are equally matched. I try to balance those two evils and just make it through the day!

I wish I had the answer, but until someone finds it I guess we will all just flounder around in survival mode. Oh, the rum and coke can certainly help.

I'm still trying to figure out how to bottle up my kids energy and sell it. I'd be a millionaire in about 5 minutes flat.

Hi Amanda -- I saw nanny in your title and had to check out your blog. Love your blog posts -- so funny, so true!

My daughter (now 20) was a bundle of energy growing up too! Every day she would jump in my bed at 6:30 a.m. and say, "What are we going to do today Mommy?" We were always the first to arrive at any playground, YMCA pool, or local event and the last to leave!

You only have to wait until they are about 13 and start to sleep in on weekends. Woo-hoo!

Hehehe, I have definitely had moments like that.

"Why do we have to go to bed at 9:30? It's SUMMERRRRRR!"
"Because The Nanny needs a stiff drink and you can't be awake to see that, darlings."
